DELAWARE- Effort to prevent sex crimes is misplaced http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20100118/OPINION07/1180304/1004/OPINION Chemical castration rarely works. Most people who commit sex crimes do so because of a variety of influences on their behavior, including the desire to express anger through violence. The hormones that cause and sustain sex drives may not play any role at all in the urge to commit a sex crime. Even when they do, they are better managed through other techniques, including cognitive behavioral therapy, which teaches offenders to choose different outlets and to avoid triggers. If sex crimes were as easy to control as simply removing the sex drive, we would have solved this problem long ago. Reaction mixed as some of Walsh law ruled unconstitutional http://www.lancastereaglegazette.com/article/20100604/NEWS01/6040308/1002/rss01 LANCASTER --The Ohio Supreme Court on Thursday ruled sections of the state's newest sexual offender law, the Adam Walsh Act, are unconstitutional. In a 5-1 decision, the high court said Thursday that classification provisions of the sex-offender law passed in 2008 violate the separation of powers among branches of government. The ruling means sex offenders convicted before the law went into effect Jan. 1, 2008, would revert back to the classifications they received under the old Megan's Law -- and potentially be subject to less stringent registration and notification requirements. The ruling leaves in place the new, tougher requirements for those convicted since. http://www.sunshinestatenews.com/print/638481 Making Teens Optional on Sex-Offender List Federal proposal would give states the option of keeping juvenile predators off public registries Kenric Ward Posted: June 1, 2010 12:46 AM While Florida is tough -- and getting tougher -- on sex offenders, the U.S. Department of Justice is looking to undercut those efforts when it comes to teenagers. Current law requires all juveniles 14 and older convicted of sex crimes to register for the rest of their lives and for states to post that information publicly. Florida currently has 113 teenagers listed on its sex-offender registry.
